Venezia – a gondola ride back in time.

Dear travel seeker, design engineer, adventurer and poetry slammer AND romantic – Hi EVERYONE,

Venezia, Venice, Venedig, a romantic city with a lot of names.

During the 18th century, Venice became perhaps the most elegant and refined city in Europe, greatly influencing art, architecture and literature. Venice is built on an archipelago of 117 islands formed by 177 canals in a shallow lagoon, connected by 409 bridges. In the old centre, the canals serve the function of roads, and almost every form of transport is on water or on foot.

During our stay in Venice this time, we only had a few hours, but having been a lot of times before, I know this city and it’s unique places to visit. Part of my family lives in Bergamo, which is only a two hours drive, therefore we end up visiting Venezia quite regularly.

The reason why I am saying this, is that I don’t have photos from all the places necessary to visit and which I will recommend in my top ten sights below.

Venice is a a collaboration of little islands all surrounded by each other at the north-east coast of Italy.

Below is a map of Venice in order for you to know your way around.

Having visited Venice a lot of times, I must admit, you still never run out of new things to discover. Whether that is to visit one of the 115 tiny islands, discover one more of the 400+ pedestrian footbridges spanning the canals or a few of the 150 canals itself.

Venice is sinking at the rate of 1-2 millimeters a year, which means they need to keep finding solutions to “rescue” the islands. However, there are more than 400 gondoliers in Venice, which would rescue you from drowning :D

A realist, in Venice, would become a romantic by mere faithfulness to what he saw before him.
