Low Voltage, high Performance: 48 Volt Technology
Full hybrid functionality realized with the cost efficient 48 Volt Technology (30 kW peak power and compact design), the latest and most fascinating technology Continental has recently put on the market. Nebst the incredible fuel efficiency it also generates excellent emission robustness, while leaving great comfort & driving pleasure with the electric boosting. Continental’s 48V technology achieves documented fuel savings of approximately 21 percent in real world urban driving. One of the most recent production breakthroughs for electrification came with the launch of 48V diesel hybrid versions of the Scénic and Grand Scénic models from French manufacturer Renault. These models already boast a highly efficient engine and this is now being taken a stage further through their electric drive system from Continental. With the production vehicle, both the fuel-saving hybrid driving functions as well as the enormous gain in convenience of a 48-Volt hybrid will be made tangible.
The Continental Urban mobility Experience – CUbE
CUbE is a development platform for the wide range of Continental technologies that are needed for the operation of driverless mobility systems in future. Continental is convinced that these autonomous, electrically powered vehicles – without driver, steering wheel or brake pedal – will make an important contribution to improving the traffic situation and consequently also the quality of life in urban areas. Important is the emphasis on the shuttle services they are trying to improve and integrate in future mobility services.
The base model is provided by the french company Easy Miles, which is then greatly equipped with all latest technology developed by Continental.
“We are partnering with EasyMile to jointly enhance our capabilities in the development of technologies for fully autonomous driving in all urban areas – not just those the cars have been trained for. By 2050 more than two-thirds of all people will be living in cities, twice as many as today. For seamless mobility, the cities of the future will require enhanced shared mobility systems. These include new fleets of robot taxis: automated vehicles that are in fact small computers on wheels – electrically powered and extremely efficient. Our systems will make such vehicles more cost-effective, environmentally friendly, convenient, and safe.”, explains Dr. Elmar Degenhart, Chairman of the Continental Board.
Many aspects of the technology used in the vehicle are based on the driver assistance systems and sensors that are already installed in today’s serial production vehicles, but new technologies are also used, such as the laser sensor. Based on this expertise, these systems will be further developed to control the vehicle completely autonomously.
“For driverless vehicles, so-called position determination is extremely important. The vehicle must know exactly where it is at all times,”explains Dr. Andree Hohm, head of the Self-Driving Car project at Continental.
Position determination is performed in the background undetected by the passengers. As well as using high-precision GPS geolocation as a reference, Continental also works with innovative algorithms.
The CUbE project is one of the three pillars underpinning Automated Driving: Cruising Chauffeur, Self-Driving Car and Automated Parking. During the IAA – in hall 5.1 and in the New Mobility world – Continental will show how these projects complement one another creating a “seamless mobility”.
Tyres: Tread depth
We are being given three VW Golf, each of them prepped with a different set of tires or rather tread depth. The challenge: Full braking on a wet test track, varying between 1,6 – 8,0 mm tread depth. The legal minimum tread depth is at 1,6 mm and pretty quickly it is clear, which I have been preaching my clients in the classic car world for years (as age and rubber changes are even more added negative features), that these tires will not provide enough grip nor traction for safe mobility. Additionally, of course, the braking distance growth – something we have measured on site and found up to 40 % of increased braking distance between the variants! 40%!!!
