Festival of Speed – Goodwood in its glory.

The Gallery is at the bottom.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed was founded in 1993 by Lord March in order to bring motor racing back to the Goodwood estate.

I want to introduce you to the British world of classic and super sports cars events. Every year around June/July Lord March opens the gate to his glorious country estate host a spectacle for many motor enthusiasts and petrol heads as he can.

Originally started in 1993 as an excuse to meet up with some of his high profile racing driver friends and have a throwback to the motorsport heyday of the old Goodwood race track in the 50’s. As he lacked the permit to race at the track he instead set a traditional British hill climb race at the grounds of the main manor house.  Only a few hundred people turned up to watch but today it has grown to rival the Silverstone Grand prix as the main motoring event to at in the British summer.

Only 1.8km long a formula 1 car can be though the course in a flash. The record time for the hillclimb was set in 1999 when Nick Heidfelddrove a McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car up the hill in 41.6 seconds (100.385 mph (161.554 km/h)). For safety reasons Formula One cars are no longer allowed to do official timed runs, and will often focus on demonstrations that are spectacular rather than fast.

However the magical thing about the racing at Goodwood is you get to see a LMP2 Le Mans race winning car followed immediately by a 1927 Bugatti type 35 with no hope of winning but being thrashed within an inch of its life as if he might just win.

Another amazing event at Goodwood is the Goodwood Revival – a must-go to of EVERY classic car lover. This event sees multi million pound rare as they come sports cars and racing classics competing head to head. shurly not one to miss if you get the chance.

Check out this video of Kenny Brack an ex Indy 500 winner dancing a priceless GT40 around the wet Goodwood track in.
